Losing your erection during sex: why it happens and how to fix it
Getting hard is one thing. Staying hard until you finish is another. Losing an erection during sex is very common, and it usually has a clear cause you can work on.
In short: Men lose erections during sex because of performance anxiety, distraction, alcohol, tiredness, condom problems, position changes, early signs of poor circulation or a weak pelvic floor. Slowing down, reducing pressure, training the pelvic floor and improving blood flow all help. If it happens most of the time, it is worth a proper check.
Common reasons erections fade mid-sex
Anxiety and overthinking
Once you start watching your erection, your stress hormones rise and blood flow drops. This is the most common cause in younger men. Our guide to performance anxiety in men explains how to break the cycle.
Putting on a condom
The pause and focus on fit can be enough to lose an erection. Practise alone, try different sizes and keep touching during the change. See why men lose their erection putting on a condom.
Alcohol and tiredness
A few drinks relax you, but more than that dulls nerves. Being exhausted has the same effect.
Weak venous seal
In some men blood leaks out of the penis too quickly, so the erection fades even when arousal is high. A stronger pelvic floor helps keep blood in.
Early circulation problems
If erections fade more often than before, or morning erections are weaker, blood vessels may be under strain. This can be an early sign of heart or blood sugar problems.
What you can do tonight
- Slow down and stay connected to touch and pleasure rather than the goal
- Keep stimulation going during position or condom changes
- Limit alcohol to one or two drinks
- Choose positions that keep the penis well supported
What helps over the following weeks
- Daily kegel exercises for men
- At least 150 minutes of brisk activity each week
- Better sleep and less late-night screen time
- Talking openly with your partner to take pressure off

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.

Frequently asked questions
Why do I lose my erection during sex but not when masturbating?
This usually points to anxiety, pressure or unfamiliar stimulation rather than a blood flow problem. A firm grip during masturbation can also make partnered sex feel less intense.
Is losing an erection during sex normal?
It happens to most men occasionally. It becomes a concern when it happens most of the time or for several weeks.
Can kegel exercises help me stay hard?
Yes. The pelvic floor muscles help trap blood in the penis, and training them improves erection firmness for many men.
Can a naturopath help with losing erections?
Yes. We look at stress, circulation, sleep, diet and lifestyle and build a personalised natural plan, and refer you if something needs medical care.
How much does a consultation cost?
A consultation is R2,500, and any remedy costs are confirmed with you before you go ahead.
