Pistachios for Erectile Dysfunction: Can Nuts Help Erections?
Can pistachios help erectile dysfunction? Learn what a small study found, why nuts support blood vessels and cholesterol, and how many to eat.
In short: Pistachios for erectile dysfunction gained attention after a small study found men who ate about 100 g a day for three weeks had better erectile function scores and cholesterol. Nuts support blood vessel health, but they are a helpful food – not a treatment on their own.
Why pistachios?
Pistachios are rich in arginine (used to make nitric oxide), antioxidants, fibre, healthy fats and plant sterols. Together, these support healthy cholesterol and blood vessels – both important for erections.
What did the study find?
A small study of men with ED found that eating around 100 g of pistachios a day for three weeks was linked to improved erectile function scores and better cholesterol levels. The study was small and had no placebo group, so the results are promising but not proof.
Other nuts that support men’s health
- Walnuts: omega-3 fats and antioxidants – see walnuts benefits for men
- Almonds and hazelnuts: vitamin E and healthy fats
- Brazil nuts: selenium for sperm health – see selenium for male fertility
A larger study found that adding mixed nuts to a Western-style diet improved some measures of sexual function in healthy men.
How many should you eat?
100 g a day is a lot – roughly 560 calories. For most men, a handful (about 30 g) a day is a sensible amount that fits a balanced diet without adding too much weight. Choose unsalted, raw or dry-roasted nuts; heavily salted nuts can raise blood pressure.
Pistachios and cholesterol
High cholesterol damages blood vessels, including those in the penis. Nuts can modestly lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Read high cholesterol and erectile dysfunction.
Put nuts in a bigger plan
Nuts are most useful as part of a Mediterranean-style eating pattern with vegetables, fruit, olive oil, fish and whole grains. Combine this with regular exercise, not smoking and less alcohol. See natural Viagra foods and olive oil benefits for men.
Cautions
- Avoid nuts if you have a nut allergy.
- Salted or flavoured nuts add sodium.
- Large portions add many calories.
