Ashwagandha benefits for men: stress, testosterone and libido
Ashwagandha is one of the most searched herbs among men who feel stressed, tired and less interested in sex. Here is what the research says about ashwagandha benefits for men, and how to use it safely.
In short: Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is an adaptogenic herb. Small clinical trials suggest it may reduce stress and improve sleep, and some studies found modest increases in testosterone and sperm quality in men. Evidence for libido and erections is limited. It can affect the thyroid and interact with some medicines, and rare liver problems have been reported.
What is ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha is a shrub used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. Its root and leaf extracts are classed as “adaptogens”, meaning they are thought to help the body cope with stress.
Possible benefits for men
Stress and cortisol
Several small trials found that ashwagandha reduced stress scores and cortisol levels compared with placebo. Long-term stress suppresses sex drive and can weaken erections, so this is a relevant benefit. Read the stress and sexual health connection.
Sleep
Some studies suggest ashwagandha may improve sleep quality and help people fall asleep. Good sleep supports healthy testosterone.
Testosterone and sperm
Studies in men, including men with fertility concerns, have reported modest increases in testosterone and improvements in sperm count and motility. Results vary, and trials are small.
Libido and performance
There is early evidence that ashwagandha may improve self-reported sexual wellbeing, possibly through lower stress. It is not a proven treatment for erectile dysfunction.
How much to take
Clinical trials commonly used 250 to 600 mg of root extract a day for 8 to 12 weeks. Choose a registered product with a stated extract strength.
Side effects and safety
- Mild stomach upset, drowsiness and loose stools are the most common side effects.
- Rare cases of liver injury have been reported. Stop and seek care if you notice yellow skin or eyes, dark urine or itching.
- Ashwagandha may raise thyroid hormone levels, so men with thyroid conditions should avoid it without advice.
- It may interact with sedatives, thyroid medicine, diabetes and blood pressure medicine, and immune-suppressing drugs.
Where ashwagandha fits
Ashwagandha can be a helpful option for men whose low drive is linked to stress and poor sleep. It works alongside, not instead of, rest, exercise and good nutrition.
