Tribulus terrestris benefits: what it does and does not do for men
Tribulus terrestris, known locally as duwweltjie, grows across South Africa and is a staple ingredient in testosterone and “performance” supplements. Here are the realistic tribulus terrestris benefits based on research.
In short: Studies show tribulus does not reliably raise testosterone in healthy men. Some small trials suggest it may improve libido and mild erectile dysfunction, but results are mixed. It is generally well tolerated in short-term use, though rare side effects have been reported. It is not a substitute for addressing the cause of low drive.
What is tribulus?
Tribulus terrestris is a creeping plant with spiky seed pods, called duwweltjie in Afrikaans or devil’s thorn. It contains saponins such as protodioscin, which are believed to be responsible for its effects.
What the evidence shows
Testosterone
Despite heavy marketing, reviews of human studies found that tribulus does not significantly raise testosterone in healthy men or athletes.
Libido
Some small trials found improved sexual desire and satisfaction, particularly in men with low libido. Others found no effect.
Erections
One randomised trial in men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction reported modest improvement, while another found no benefit over placebo. Overall the evidence is inconclusive.
Athletic performance
There is no good evidence that tribulus improves muscle or strength.
Typical use
Studies used a wide range of doses, often 250 to 1,500 mg a day of extract. Product quality and saponin content vary widely.
Side effects
- Usually mild, such as stomach upset or trouble sleeping.
- Rare reports of liver and kidney problems exist with high or prolonged use.
- It may lower blood sugar and blood pressure, so check first if you take medicine for these.
- Avoid unlabelled “tribulus” sex pills, which have been found to contain hidden drugs in some markets.
The bottom line
Tribulus is unlikely to change testosterone and may offer a small benefit for desire in some men. If you want stronger drive and erections, the basics matter more: sleep, exercise, weight, alcohol and stress.
