Nutrients for men
Vitamins for erectile dysfunction: which ones matter and why
Men often ask whether a vitamin can help weak erections. Some vitamins for erectile dysfunction do matter, mainly when you are low in them. Here is what the research shows for each one.
In short: Low vitamin D, folate (B9) and vitamin B12 are linked with erectile dysfunction in studies, and correcting a deficiency may help. Niacin (B3) improved erections in one trial of men with high cholesterol. Vitamin C supports nitric oxide. Vitamins are most likely to help if you are deficient, and they are most useful alongside lifestyle changes.
Why vitamins can affect erections
Erections depend on healthy blood vessels, nerves and hormones. Several vitamins support these systems. When levels are low, blood vessel function can suffer.
Vitamins with the strongest links
Vitamin D
Studies have found that men with low vitamin D are more likely to have erectile dysfunction, possibly because vitamin D supports blood vessel health and testosterone. Whether supplements improve erections is still being studied. Sunlight, oily fish and eggs are sources. Many South Africans who work indoors are low.
Folate (vitamin B9)
Low folate has been linked with ED in several studies. Folate helps control homocysteine, an amino acid that can damage blood vessels at high levels. Leafy greens, legumes and fortified bread are good sources.
Vitamin B12
B12 supports nerves and helps lower homocysteine. Deficiency is more common in older men, vegetarians and men on metformin or acid-reducing medicines.
Niacin (vitamin B3)
One trial found niacin improved erectile function in men with moderate to severe ED who also had high cholesterol. High-dose niacin can cause flushing and liver strain, so it should only be used with professional advice.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that helps protect nitric oxide. Citrus, guavas, peppers and broccoli are rich sources.
Vitamins vs lifestyle
Vitamins help most when they correct a deficiency. They do not replace the biggest drivers of healthy erections: exercise, healthy weight, no smoking, moderate alcohol and good sleep. See home remedies for erectile dysfunction.
Should you test your levels?
If you have fatigue, low mood, numbness or tingling, or follow a restricted diet, it may be worth checking vitamin D and B12. Our naturopaths can review your symptoms and diet and refer you to an appropriately registered medical professional for blood tests if needed. Also read foods that help erectile dysfunction.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.
