Average penis size: what is normal, according to research

What research shows
A widely cited review published in 2015 combined measurements taken by health professionals from more than 15,000 men. It found:
- Erect length: about 13.1 cm (5.2 inches)
- Erect girth: about 11.7 cm (4.6 inches)
- Flaccid length: about 9.2 cm (3.6 inches)
- Flaccid girth: about 9.3 cm (3.7 inches)

How to measure correctly
- Measure when fully erect.
- Place a ruler along the top of the penis, pressing gently into the fat pad at the base until you reach the pubic bone.
- Measure to the tip.
- For girth, wrap a soft tape around the middle of the shaft.
Why many men think they are small
- Viewing angle: looking down makes the penis appear shorter.
- Comparison with porn: performers are selected for size and filmed from flattering angles.
- Belly fat: a fat pad can hide several centimetres of length. Losing weight can reveal it.
