Magnesium benefits for men: sleep, testosterone and muscle
Magnesium is involved in more than 300 processes in the body, yet many men do not get enough. Here are the magnesium benefits for men that matter for energy, sleep and sexual health.
In short: Magnesium supports muscle and nerve function, sleep, blood pressure and blood sugar control. Studies link higher magnesium levels with higher testosterone in older men, and one trial found magnesium supplements raised testosterone in active men. Men need about 400 to 420 mg a day, mostly from food.
Why magnesium matters
Magnesium helps muscles relax, nerves send signals and the body produce energy. It also helps regulate blood pressure and insulin.
Benefits for men
Sleep and stress
Magnesium helps calm the nervous system. Low magnesium is linked with poor sleep, and good sleep supports testosterone and libido. See lack of sleep and erectile dysfunction.
Testosterone
Studies in older men found that those with higher magnesium levels had higher testosterone. A small trial found magnesium supplements increased testosterone in both sedentary men and athletes, more so in those who trained.
Muscle and exercise
Magnesium supports muscle contraction and recovery, helping you train consistently.
Blood pressure and blood sugar
Adequate magnesium supports healthy blood pressure and insulin sensitivity, protecting the blood vessels involved in erections.
Signs you may be low
- Muscle cramps or twitches
- Poor sleep
- Fatigue and weakness
- Irritability
Men at higher risk include those with type 2 diabetes, heavy alcohol use, digestive conditions, or who take some diuretics or acid-reducing medicines.
Food sources
- Pumpkin seeds, almonds and cashews. See pumpkin seeds benefits for men.
- Spinach and other leafy greens
- Beans, lentils and whole grains
- Avocado and dark chocolate
- Bananas. See bananas benefits for men.
How much do men need?
Adult men need about 400 to 420 mg a day. The upper limit for supplements (not food) is 350 mg a day, as higher doses can cause diarrhoea.
Supplements
- Magnesium glycinate is gentle on the stomach and often used for sleep.
- Magnesium citrate is well absorbed but can loosen stools.
- Avoid supplements if you have kidney disease unless advised.
- Magnesium can reduce absorption of some antibiotics and osteoporosis medicines, so take them at different times.
