Vaping and erectile dysfunction: what nicotine does to erections
Many men switched from cigarettes to vapes believing they were harmless. When it comes to sexual health, vaping and erectile dysfunction may be more connected than you think.
In short: Most vapes contain nicotine, which narrows blood vessels and reduces blood flow to the penis. A large US survey found that men who vaped daily were about twice as likely to report erectile dysfunction as men who never vaped. Vaping is likely less harmful than smoking, but cutting down or stopping nicotine is one of the clearest steps for healthier erections.
How nicotine affects erections
An erection needs the arteries in the penis to relax and fill with blood. Nicotine does the opposite. It tightens blood vessels, raises heart rate and blood pressure, and over time damages the vessel lining.
What the research shows
A study of more than 13,000 American men found that daily e-cigarette users were more than twice as likely to report ED than men who had never vaped, even after accounting for age and heart disease. The research is still young, but the direction is clear.
Is vaping better than smoking for erections?
Vaping avoids the tar and smoke of cigarettes, so it is probably less harmful overall. But nicotine itself still affects blood flow. If you vape to quit smoking, that is a step forward. The aim should be to reduce and eventually stop nicotine altogether. Our article on smoking and erectile dysfunction explains why.
Other ways vaping can affect sexual health
- Poorer sleep from nicotine late in the evening
- Higher anxiety and restlessness between puffs
- Possible effects on sperm quality, still being studied
Steps to protect your erections
Cut down gradually
Lower the nicotine strength step by step and set vape-free times, such as the hour before bed.
Replace the habit
Short walks, breathing exercises or chewing gum can fill the gap.
Support circulation
Regular exercise and foods rich in nitrates, such as leafy greens and beetroot, support healthy blood flow. See nitric oxide foods for erections.
Get support
A naturopath can help you manage cravings, stress and sleep while building a natural plan for stronger erections.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.

Frequently asked questions
Can vaping cause erectile dysfunction?
Research suggests daily vaping is linked to a higher chance of ED, mainly because nicotine narrows blood vessels and reduces blood flow to the penis.
Is nicotine-free vaping safe for erections?
It avoids nicotine, which is the main concern for blood flow, but the long-term effects of inhaling vape aerosols are still not fully known.
Will my erections improve if I stop vaping?
Many men notice better erections within weeks to months of stopping nicotine, especially if they also exercise and sleep well.
Is vaping better than smoking for ED?
Probably less harmful, but both deliver nicotine. Reducing and stopping nicotine is the better goal.
How much does a consultation cost?
A consultation is R2,500, and any remedy costs are confirmed with you before you go ahead.
