Walking for erectile dysfunction: a simple plan that supports stronger erections
You do not need a gym membership to help your erections. Walking for erectile dysfunction is one of the simplest, cheapest and most researched natural steps a man can take.
In short: Brisk walking improves blood vessel health, lowers blood pressure and blood sugar, helps with weight loss and reduces stress, all of which support erections. Research suggests about 160 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a week, for example 40 minutes four times a week, can improve ED within six months. Start where you are and build up gradually.
Why walking helps erections
Erections rely on healthy arteries that can widen quickly. Brisk walking trains the blood vessels to release more nitric oxide, the signal that relaxes them. It also helps with the things that commonly cause ED: excess weight, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and stress.
What the research says
A review of exercise studies in men with ED found that around 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous aerobic activity four times a week improved erection scores, with results measured at six months. Men who were overweight, inactive or had heart risk factors gained the most.
How brisk is brisk?
You should be breathing harder and able to talk, but not sing. For most men this is about 5 to 6 km per hour.
An 8-week walking plan
- Weeks 1 to 2: 20 minutes, five days a week, at a comfortable pace
- Weeks 3 to 4: 30 minutes, five days a week, with the last 10 minutes brisk
- Weeks 5 to 6: 40 minutes, four to five days a week, mostly brisk
- Weeks 7 to 8: 40 to 45 minutes, four to five days a week, adding hills or faster stretches
Make it count
Walk after meals
A short walk after dinner lowers blood sugar spikes, which helps men with insulin resistance.
Add pelvic floor work
Combine walking with daily kegel exercises for men for a stronger effect on firmness.
Track it
A phone step counter keeps you honest. Aim to build towards 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day.
Safety first
If you have chest pain, breathlessness out of proportion to effort or a known heart condition, check with an appropriately registered medical professional before increasing activity.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.

Frequently asked questions
Can walking fix erectile dysfunction?
Walking will not fix every cause, but it improves blood flow, weight, blood pressure and stress, and studies show it can improve erections for many men.
How much walking helps ED?
Around 160 minutes of brisk walking a week, such as 40 minutes four times a week, is the amount most often linked to improvement.
How long before walking improves erections?
Some men notice better energy within weeks, but most studies measure erection improvements after about six months.
Is walking or running better for ED?
Both help. Brisk walking is easier to keep up and gentler on joints, which matters more than intensity for long-term results.
How much does a consultation cost?
A consultation is R2,500, and any remedy costs are confirmed with you before you go ahead.
