Sea moss benefits for men: nutrients, claims and safety
Sea moss has become a social media favourite, with claims that it boosts testosterone, libido and stamina. Here is an honest look at sea moss benefits for men.
In short: Sea moss is a red seaweed that contains iodine, fibre and small amounts of minerals such as magnesium, zinc and iron. It may support general nutrition and gut health, but there is no good human evidence that it raises testosterone or improves erections. Its high and variable iodine content can upset the thyroid, so dose matters.
What is sea moss?
Sea moss, often called Irish moss, is a red seaweed (Chondrus crispus and related species). It is sold dried, as a gel, in capsules or in drinks.
Nutrients in sea moss
- Iodine, needed for thyroid hormones
- Soluble fibre and carrageenan, which may feed gut bacteria
- Small amounts of magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron and zinc
A typical serving of gel provides only modest amounts of most minerals.
Claims for men
Testosterone
There are no human studies showing sea moss raises testosterone. Zinc and magnesium matter for hormones, but you would get more from pumpkin seeds, nuts or beans. See zinc for men.
Libido and erections
Any effect is likely to come from better overall nutrition. There is no direct evidence it improves erections.
Energy
Men low in iodine or iron may feel better with improved intake, but most men eating a varied diet are not deficient.
The iodine problem
Iodine content in seaweed varies widely. Too much iodine can cause an underactive or overactive thyroid, which can lower libido and affect erections. See thyroid and erectile dysfunction.
- Keep to small servings, such as one to two tablespoons of gel a day
- Avoid it if you have a thyroid condition unless guided by a professional
- Choose products tested for heavy metals
Who should avoid sea moss
- Men taking thyroid medicine or with thyroid disease
- Men taking blood thinners, as seaweed can affect clotting
- Anyone with an iodine allergy
A smarter approach
Sea moss can be part of a varied diet, but it is not a fix for low libido or ED. A naturopath can look at your diet, sleep, stress and hormones and recommend supplements only where they make sense. Read about how to increase sex drive in men naturally.
