Nutrients for men
Zinc benefits for men sexually: testosterone, sperm and libido
Zinc is a mineral that plays a direct role in male hormones and fertility. Here is what zinc benefits for men sexually really look like, who might be low, and how to get enough without overdoing it.
In short: Zinc is needed to produce testosterone and healthy sperm. Men who are low in zinc can have lower testosterone, poorer sperm and reduced libido, and correcting a deficiency helps. Extra zinc does not boost testosterone in men who already get enough. Adult men need about 11 mg a day, and long-term intake above 40 mg a day can cause harm.
Why zinc matters for men
Zinc is involved in hundreds of processes in the body. For men, it is especially important for:
- Testosterone production in the testes.
- Sperm formation, count and movement. Semen contains high levels of zinc.
- Immune function and wound healing.
- Taste and smell, which can quietly affect appetite and enjoyment.
Signs you may be low in zinc
- Frequent colds and slow-healing wounds
- Loss of appetite or reduced taste
- Hair thinning
- Low libido or lower testosterone
Men at higher risk include those who drink heavily, have digestive conditions, eat little animal protein, or have diabetes.
What the evidence says
- Studies show that zinc deficiency lowers testosterone, and correcting it can restore levels.
- Zinc supplements improved sperm quality in some studies of men with fertility concerns, although a large trial found no benefit in the general population of men trying to conceive.
- There is no good evidence that zinc treats erectile dysfunction in men with normal zinc levels.
Food sources of zinc
- Red meat and chicken
- Oysters and other shellfish (the richest source)
- Pumpkin seeds, cashews and chickpeas
- Dairy, eggs and whole grains

How much zinc do men need?
Adult men need about 11 mg a day. The upper limit for adults is 40 mg a day from all sources. Too much zinc over time can lower copper levels, weaken immunity and cause nausea.
Should you take a zinc supplement?
Food first is usually enough. A supplement may help if your diet is limited or a deficiency is suspected. Our naturopaths can review your diet and symptoms, and refer you to an appropriately registered medical professional if blood tests are needed. Learn more in how to increase testosterone naturally.
