Premature ejaculation
Delay condoms: how they work and whether they help
Delay condoms are sold in most pharmacies and supermarkets as a quick way to last longer. They can help some men, but it is worth knowing how they work and what to watch out for.
In short: Delay condoms reduce sensation in one of two ways: a numbing gel inside the tip, usually benzocaine, or thicker latex. Many men find they add a few minutes. They also protect against pregnancy and STIs. Downsides include reduced pleasure, numbness for the partner if gel transfers, and possible allergy. They manage the symptom rather than building control.
Two types of delay condom
Numbing condoms
These contain a small amount of local anaesthetic, usually benzocaine, inside the tip. It gradually numbs the head of the penis, the most sensitive part.
Thicker condoms
Extra-thick latex reduces sensation without any medicine. Some men prefer these because there is no numbing.
Do they work?
Research on benzocaine condoms is limited, but small studies and user reports suggest many men last a little longer. Results vary. They tend to help men whose PE is mainly linked to sensitivity, less so when anxiety is the main driver.
How to use them
- Check the expiry date and packaging
- Put the condom on the right way round so the gel is on the inside
- Allow a few minutes for numbing to take effect
- Use a water-based lubricant if needed
Possible downsides
- Less pleasure, or difficulty reaching orgasm
- Softer erections in some men because of reduced sensation, see why men lose their erection putting on a condom
- Numbness for your partner if the condom is put on inside out
- Allergic reaction to latex or benzocaine
Delay condoms versus sprays
Delay sprays work in a similar way but do not protect against STIs or pregnancy. See do delay sprays work.
Building lasting control
Delay condoms are useful tools, but they do not train your body. Combining them with premature ejaculation exercises, breathing techniques and the squeeze technique gives longer-term results.

- Do you usually ejaculate sooner than you or your partner would like?
- Has this always been the case, or did it start recently?
- Do you feel you have little or no control over when you ejaculate?
- Is it causing stress, avoidance or tension in your relationship?
- Do you also have trouble getting or keeping an erection?
A yes to questions one, three or four suggests a consultation would help. Problems that started recently, or that come with erection difficulties, are worth discussing early, because the cause often guides the most effective natural plan.
