Premature ejaculation
The squeeze technique for premature ejaculation: a practical guide
The squeeze technique is one of the oldest and most widely recommended behavioural methods for premature ejaculation. It costs nothing, needs no products and can be learnt at home.
In short: The squeeze technique means stopping stimulation when you feel close to ejaculating and firmly squeezing the head of the penis, where it joins the shaft, for 10 to 20 seconds until the urge fades. Repeating this several times during practice trains you to recognise your arousal levels and delay ejaculation. Most men need several weeks of regular practice.
How the squeeze technique works
It interrupts the ejaculation reflex just before the point of no return. Over time you learn to recognise the feelings that come before ejaculation and gain more control over them.
Step by step: practising alone
- Choose a relaxed time with no rush
- Stimulate yourself until you feel you are at about 7 or 8 out of 10 arousal
- Stop and firmly squeeze the penis just below the head, thumb on the frenulum and two fingers on top
- Hold for 10 to 20 seconds until the urge to ejaculate passes; you may lose some firmness, which is normal
- Wait about 30 seconds, then start again
- Repeat three or four times before allowing yourself to ejaculate
Step by step: with a partner
Once you are confident alone, show your partner the grip. During foreplay or sex, signal when you are close, withdraw, and either of you can apply the squeeze. Then continue.
Common mistakes
- Waiting too long, past the point of no return
- Squeezing too lightly to have an effect, or so hard it hurts
- Practising only once in a while
- Treating it as a test rather than a learning process
How long does it take?
Many men notice more control within a few weeks. Practise three or four times a week for at least 6 to 8 weeks.
Combine it with other methods
The squeeze works well alongside the start-stop or edging technique, premature ejaculation exercises and breathing techniques.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- Do you usually ejaculate sooner than you or your partner would like?
- Has this always been the case, or did it start recently?
- Do you feel you have little or no control over when you ejaculate?
- Is it causing stress, avoidance or tension in your relationship?
- Do you also have trouble getting or keeping an erection?
A yes to questions one, three or four suggests a consultation would help. Problems that started recently, or that come with erection difficulties, are worth discussing early, because the cause often guides the most effective natural plan.
