ED explained
How long does erectile dysfunction last? It depends on the cause
When erections let you down, the first question is usually: how long will this last? The answer depends mostly on what is causing it, and many causes are temporary.
In short: ED caused by stress, tiredness, alcohol or a new relationship often settles within days to weeks once the trigger passes. ED from medicines may ease within weeks of a change agreed with your prescriber. ED linked to circulation, weight, diabetes or smoking usually improves over 3 to 6 months of steady lifestyle change. Long-standing nerve damage can take longer and may only partly recover.
Short-term ED (days to weeks)
Stress, tiredness and nerves
A busy month, poor sleep or a new partner can cause a few disappointing nights. These usually settle once pressure eases. See performance anxiety in men.
Alcohol
Heavy drinking affects erections that night and sometimes for a day or two after. Regular heavy drinking causes longer-lasting problems.
Illness
A fever, flu or recovery from surgery can lower erections for a while.
Medium-term ED (weeks to months)
Medicines
Some blood pressure medicines, antidepressants and other drugs affect erections. Never stop a medicine on your own; ask your prescriber about alternatives.
Relationship strain or low mood
These often need time and support.
Longer-term ED (months)
Circulation and lifestyle
ED linked to weight, smoking, inactivity, high blood pressure or insulin resistance improves as blood vessels recover, usually over 3 to 6 months of consistent change.
Nerve damage
After prostate surgery or with long-standing diabetes, recovery can take a year or more.
How to shorten recovery
- Exercise most days, see walking for erectile dysfunction
- Cut back on alcohol and stop smoking
- Sleep seven to eight hours
- Take pressure off sex while you recover
- Get a check of blood pressure and blood sugar

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.
