Can erectile dysfunction cause infertility?
Couples trying for a baby sometimes find erections become unreliable just when timing matters most. So can erectile dysfunction cause infertility?
In short: ED does not damage sperm, but it can make conception harder by reducing how often a couple has sex, especially around ovulation. Some causes of ED, such as diabetes, obesity, smoking, heavy drinking and low testosterone, can also lower sperm quality. The pressure of timed sex often makes ED worse. Addressing both erections and sperm health together works well.
How ED affects conception
Pregnancy needs sperm to reach the egg during the fertile window. If erections are unreliable, couples may have sex less often or miss key days.
Shared causes of ED and poor sperm
- Diabetes and insulin resistance
- Obesity and belly fat
- Smoking and vaping
- Heavy drinking, see alcohol and sperm quality
- Low testosterone or steroid use
- Stress and poor sleep, see can stress cause low sperm count
Fertility pressure and ED
Scheduled sex can feel like a test. Anxiety raises stress hormones and makes erections less reliable. Many couples get stuck in this cycle.
What helps
Take the pressure off
Have sex every one to two days through the fertile window rather than only on the peak day. Keep intimacy for pleasure at other times too.
Support erections
Exercise, sleep, less alcohol and stress support, see erectile dysfunction treatment without pills.
Support sperm
Remember new sperm take about three months to develop. See how long does sperm take to regenerate.
When to get tested
If you have been trying for a year, or six months if your partner is over 35, ask an appropriately registered medical professional about a semen analysis.
