Alcohol and sperm quality: what drinking does to male fertility
Most fertility advice focuses on women, but men’s habits matter too. Alcohol and sperm quality are closely linked, and heavy drinking can make conception harder.
In short: Regular heavy drinking lowers testosterone, reduces sperm count and motility and increases abnormal sperm. Binge drinking also affects erections and libido. Light, occasional drinking appears to have little effect for most men. If you are trying to conceive, keeping alcohol low for at least three months gives new sperm a healthier start.
How alcohol affects sperm
Hormones
Alcohol interferes with the signals from the brain to the testicles and can lower testosterone. See beer and testosterone.
Sperm count and shape
Studies show men who drink heavily, especially more than 14 standard drinks a week, have lower sperm counts and more abnormally shaped sperm.
Oxidative stress
Alcohol increases free radicals that can damage sperm DNA.
Sexual function
Heavy drinking makes erections and ejaculation less reliable, which can affect timing. Read can alcohol cause erectile dysfunction.
How much is too much?
Research suggests effects become noticeable with regular drinking above about 14 units a week and with binge drinking. A standard drink is roughly one 340 ml beer, one small glass of wine or one tot of spirits.
Binge drinking
Weekend binges can harm sperm even if you do not drink during the week.
How long do sperm take to recover?
Sperm take about three months to develop. Cutting back now can show in semen quality about three months later. See how long does sperm take to regenerate.
Practical tips
- Keep to no more than one or two drinks on a day you drink, with alcohol-free days
- Avoid binge drinking completely while trying to conceive
- Choose alcohol-free beers or mocktails at social events
