Can you run out of sperm?
It is a common question, often asked half-jokingly. The short answer is no, you can not run out of sperm, but frequent ejaculation and age do affect how much you release.
In short: Men produce millions of new sperm every day from puberty into old age, so you will not run out. Ejaculating several times in a short period can lower semen volume and sperm count temporarily, and it recovers within a few days. Production slows gradually with age but continues throughout life.
How sperm production works
The testicles make sperm continuously, about 1,500 every second. Each sperm takes around two and a half to three months to mature. See how long does sperm take to regenerate.
What happens with frequent ejaculation
- Semen volume drops
- Sperm count per ejaculation falls
- Semen may look clearer or more watery, see watery sperm causes
These changes are temporary and usually recover within two to five days.
Can you run out of semen?
Semen is made mostly by the prostate and seminal vesicles. These also refill within days.
What about age?
Sperm production continues into later life, although quality and quantity decline gradually. Read age and male fertility.
When low semen volume is a concern
- Consistently very little semen
- Dry orgasm, see dry ejaculation treatment
- Trying for a baby without success
How to support healthy sperm
- Eat a varied diet with fruit, vegetables, nuts and fish
- Keep the testicles cool, see does heat affect sperm
- Limit alcohol and stop smoking
- Exercise and sleep well
