Does heat affect sperm? How to protect fertility from heat

The testicles hang outside the body for a reason. Sperm production works well a few degrees below body temperature, so heat can affect sperm more than most men realise.

In short: Yes. Sperm production needs the testicles to stay about 2 to 4 degrees cooler than core body temperature. Regular hot baths, saunas, laptops on the lap, tight underwear, long hours of sitting and fever can all lower sperm count and quality. The good news is that the effect is usually reversible within about three months once heat exposure is reduced.

Why sperm need a cooler temperature

The scrotum keeps the testicles cooler than the rest of the body by hanging away from it and adjusting its position. When the testicles get too warm, sperm production slows and more abnormal sperm are made.

Everyday sources of heat

Hot baths, saunas and hot tubs

Studies show regular hot tub use can lower sperm counts, which often recover after stopping.

Laptops on the lap

A laptop can raise scrotal temperature by more than 2 degrees within an hour. Use a desk or a lap tray.

Tight underwear and trousers

Some studies found men who wore boxers had higher sperm concentrations than men who wore tight briefs.

Long periods of sitting

Truck drivers, office workers and long-distance commuters may have warmer testicles. Stand up and move every hour.

Heated car seats

Long use may add to heat exposure.

Fever and illness

A high fever can lower sperm quality for up to three months.

Work in hot environments

Bakers, welders, miners and kitchen workers may be exposed to more heat.

Other heat-related causes

A varicocele, a swollen vein in the scrotum, raises local temperature and is a common cause of male infertility.

How to keep cool

  • Choose loose cotton underwear
  • Avoid hot baths and saunas while trying to conceive
  • Keep laptops off your lap
  • Take standing breaks if you sit for long periods
  • Sleep without heavy underwear

How long until sperm recover?

Because sperm take about three months to develop, improvements usually show in about three months. See how long does sperm take to regenerate.
