Cortisol and Testosterone: How Stress Affects Male Hormones
Chronic stress raises cortisol, which can lower testosterone, libido and erection quality. Learn how it works and natural ways to rebalance.
In short: Cortisol and testosterone tend to work in opposite directions. When stress keeps cortisol high for long periods, testosterone, libido and erection quality can suffer. Better sleep, regular exercise, recovery time and stress management help restore balance.
What is cortisol?
Cortisol is your main stress hormone, made by the adrenal glands. It helps you wake up, respond to danger and manage blood sugar. In short bursts, it is healthy. The problem is chronic stress, when cortisol stays raised day after day.
How cortisol affects testosterone
- Suppressed signals: high cortisol can dampen the brain signals that tell the testicles to make testosterone.
- Energy priorities: under stress, the body shifts resources away from reproduction.
- Sleep disruption: high evening cortisol makes it harder to sleep, and most testosterone is released during sleep. See testosterone and sleep.
- Belly fat: chronic stress encourages fat around the middle, which lowers testosterone. See belly fat and testosterone.
Effects on sexual health
- Lower sex drive
- Softer erections, as stress hormones narrow blood vessels
- Faster ejaculation in some men – see can stress cause premature ejaculation?
- Fatigue and irritability
Signs your stress hormones may be out of balance
- Feeling “wired but tired”
- Trouble falling or staying asleep
- Cravings for sugar or salt
- Weight gain around the middle
- Frequent illness
- Low mood or anxiety
Very high cortisol from a medical condition (Cushing’s syndrome) or long-term steroid medicines is different and needs medical assessment.
Natural ways to lower cortisol
- Protect your sleep: aim for seven to nine hours with a regular schedule.
- Exercise wisely: regular moderate exercise lowers stress; excessive training without rest can raise cortisol.
- Breathing and meditation: slow breathing calms the stress response – see meditation for erectile dysfunction.
- Limit caffeine late in the day.
- Cut back on alcohol, which disrupts sleep.
- Spend time outdoors and with people you trust.
- Adaptogen herbs such as ashwagandha have some research for stress – see ashwagandha benefits for men.
Work stress and sex
Long hours, shift work and job insecurity are common sources of chronic stress. Read the stress–sexual health connection and shift work and erectile dysfunction.
