Testosterone
Testosterone and sleep: why rest matters for your hormones
Most of your daily testosterone is released while you sleep. That makes testosterone and sleep one of the most important, and most overlooked, links in men’s health.
In short: Testosterone rises during sleep and peaks in the early morning. A study of young men found that one week of sleeping five hours a night lowered daytime testosterone by 10 to 15 percent. Sleep apnoea, night shifts and broken sleep also reduce testosterone, libido and morning erections. Seven to nine hours of good quality sleep supports healthy levels.
How sleep drives testosterone
Testosterone release follows your sleep cycle. Levels start to rise when you fall asleep, peak around the first REM cycles and are highest in the early morning. That is one reason men often wake with erections.
What happens when you sleep less
In a University of Chicago study, healthy young men who slept five hours a night for a week had 10 to 15 percent lower testosterone during the day. They also reported lower energy and wellbeing.
Conditions that disrupt sleep and testosterone
Sleep apnoea
Repeated breathing pauses fragment deep sleep. See sleep apnoea and erectile dysfunction.
Shift work
Night shifts disrupt the body clock and hormone rhythms.
Insomnia and stress
Lying awake with racing thoughts raises cortisol.
Alcohol
It may help you fall asleep but disrupts deep sleep later in the night.
Signs your sleep may be affecting testosterone
- Fewer morning erections
- Low sex drive
- Daytime tiredness and poor focus
- Low mood and irritability
- Difficulty building muscle
Tips to sleep better naturally
