How long should a man last in bed? What research says is normal
Expectations about stamina are often shaped by films and porn, not real life. So how long should a man last in bed? The research is reassuring for most men.
In short: A study of 500 couples across five countries found the median time from penetration to ejaculation was about 5.4 minutes, with a wide range from under a minute to over 40 minutes. Sex therapists generally consider 3 to 13 minutes of intercourse as typical. Premature ejaculation usually means consistently lasting about a minute or less, with distress.
What the research shows
In a well-known study, couples in five countries used a stopwatch to time intercourse over four weeks. The median time from penetration to ejaculation was about 5.4 minutes. Times varied widely between couples.
A survey of sex therapists rated intercourse lasting:
- 1 to 2 minutes as too short
- 3 to 7 minutes as adequate
- 7 to 13 minutes as desirable
- 10 to 30 minutes as too long
These figures refer to intercourse only, not foreplay.
When is it considered premature?
Premature ejaculation usually means regularly ejaculating within about one minute of penetration, feeling unable to delay it, and feeling distressed about it. See premature ejaculation.
Why time is not everything
Many partners value closeness, foreplay and communication more than duration. Foreplay, touch and attention to your partner’s pleasure matter as much as minutes. Some couples find longer intercourse uncomfortable.
Natural ways to last longer
- Stop-start and squeeze techniques. See home remedies for premature ejaculation.
- Pelvic floor training. See Kegel exercises for men.
- Slow breathing to calm the nervous system.
- Thicker condoms to reduce sensitivity slightly.
- More foreplay so that your partner is fully aroused.
- Reduce anxiety. See performance anxiety in men.
- Look after erections: some men rush because they fear losing their erection.
