Green tea benefits for men: metabolism, prostate and sexual health
Green tea is one of the most studied drinks in the world. Here are the realistic green tea benefits for men, including what research says about the prostate and testosterone.
In short: Green tea contains catechins such as EGCG and a moderate amount of caffeine. Studies suggest it may modestly support heart health, blood sugar and weight management. Research on prostate health is promising but not conclusive. Moderate green tea does not appear to lower testosterone in men, but high-dose extracts have been linked to liver injury.
What is in green tea?
Green tea is made from unfermented tea leaves and contains catechins (especially EGCG), L-theanine and about a third to half the caffeine of coffee.
Benefits for men
Heart and blood vessels
Studies link green tea with modest improvements in cholesterol and blood pressure, and population studies show lower heart disease risk in regular drinkers.
Metabolism and weight
Green tea may slightly increase energy use and fat burning, especially with exercise. Effects are small.
Blood sugar
Some studies suggest modest benefits for insulin sensitivity. See sugar and erectile dysfunction.
Prostate
Population studies in Asia and small trials have explored green tea catechins and prostate health. Results are promising but not conclusive, and green tea is not a cancer treatment. See prostate health symptoms men shouldn’t ignore.
Calm focus
L-theanine promotes relaxed alertness, which may help with stress.
Does green tea lower testosterone?
Some animal studies with very high doses suggested effects on testosterone, but normal green tea drinking has not been shown to lower testosterone in men.
How much green tea?
- Three to five cups a day is a common amount in studies.
- Avoid drinking it late if caffeine affects your sleep.
Safety
- High-dose green tea extract supplements have been linked to rare liver injury. Drinking the tea is considered safe.
- Green tea may reduce iron absorption; drink it between meals if you are low in iron.
- It can interact with some medicines, including certain blood pressure medicines.
Rooibos as an alternative
If you prefer caffeine-free, rooibos is a great local option. See rooibos tea benefits for men.
