Testosterone
Beer and testosterone: how alcohol affects men’s hormones
Beer is part of social life for many South African men. But how do beer and testosterone interact? Here is what research shows about alcohol and men’s hormones.
In short: Heavy drinking lowers testosterone by affecting the testes, the brain’s hormone signals and the liver. Alcohol also increases conversion of testosterone to oestrogen, adds belly fat and disrupts sleep. Moderate drinking has smaller effects. Beer adds kilojoules and contains plant compounds from hops, but the alcohol itself is the main concern.
How alcohol affects testosterone
- Testes: alcohol is directly toxic to the cells that make testosterone.
- Brain signals: alcohol disrupts the hormones that tell the testes to produce testosterone.
- Liver: alcohol strains the liver, which helps process hormones.
- Aromatase: heavy drinking increases conversion of testosterone into oestrogen. See high estrogen in men.
Beer belly
Beer is high in kilojoules and is often consumed with salty, fatty food. Belly fat lowers testosterone further. See weight loss and erectile dysfunction.
Hops and phytoestrogens
Hops contain plant compounds with weak oestrogen-like activity. Their effect in normal beer amounts is likely small compared with the alcohol itself.
Sleep
Alcohol reduces deep and REM sleep, when testosterone is produced. See lack of sleep and erectile dysfunction.
Erections
Alcohol dampens the nervous system and blood flow, making erections harder in the moment. Long-term heavy drinking can cause lasting erection problems. See can alcohol cause erectile dysfunction.
How much is too much?
- Heavy drinking, such as more than 14 standard drinks a week or binge drinking, has the strongest effect on hormones.
- A standard drink is roughly one 340 ml beer at 4.5 percent alcohol.
- Several alcohol-free days a week help.
Cutting back
- Alternate beer with water.
- Choose light or alcohol-free beers.
- Avoid drinking on an empty stomach.
- Set limits before social events.
Testosterone often improves within weeks of reducing heavy drinking.
