Causes of ED
Weight loss and erectile dysfunction: can losing weight help?
Carrying extra weight, especially around the middle, is one of the most common and most fixable causes of erection problems. Research on weight loss and erectile dysfunction is encouraging.
In short: Yes, losing weight can improve erectile dysfunction. Excess belly fat lowers testosterone, raises inflammation and damages blood vessels. In a well-known trial, about a third of obese men with ED regained normal erectile function after losing weight and exercising more over two years. Even a 5 to 10 percent weight loss can make a difference.
How excess weight affects erections
- Blood vessels: excess weight is linked with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and insulin resistance, all of which damage the arteries that supply the penis.
- Testosterone: fat tissue converts testosterone into oestrogen, and men with a large waist often have lower testosterone.
- Inflammation: abdominal fat releases inflammatory substances that harm blood vessel lining.
- Confidence and stamina: carrying extra weight can affect body image and energy for sex.
What the research shows
In a randomised trial of obese men with ED, those who reduced calories and increased exercise lost weight, and around one in three regained normal erectile function, compared with very few in the control group. Other studies show that weight loss improves testosterone levels.
How much weight do you need to lose?
You do not need to reach an “ideal” weight. Losing 5 to 10 percent of your body weight often improves blood pressure, blood sugar and erections. For a 100 kg man, that is 5 to 10 kg.
Practical steps
Eat more whole foods
Build meals around vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. Cut back on sugary drinks, fast food, white bread and processed meat. See natural Viagra foods.
Watch portions and alcohol
Alcohol adds empty kilojoules and affects erections directly. See can alcohol cause erectile dysfunction.
Move every day
Aim for about 150 minutes of brisk activity a week, plus some strength training. Exercise improves blood flow even before the scale moves.
Sleep and stress
Poor sleep and stress drive cravings and weight gain. See lack of sleep and erectile dysfunction.
Measure your waist
A waist of more than about 94 cm in men is linked with higher health risks, and above 102 cm with substantially higher risk. Measuring your waist is a simple way to track progress.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.
