Prostatitis natural remedies: easing chronic pelvic pain in men
Prostatitis is the most common prostate problem in men under 50, and the chronic form can be frustrating. Here are evidence-based prostatitis natural remedies, alongside the medical checks you need.
In short: Prostatitis can be bacterial (needing antibiotics) or, more commonly, chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome without infection. For the chronic form, quercetin and rye grass pollen extract have small trials showing benefit, and pelvic floor relaxation, heat, stress management and avoiding bladder irritants help many men. Infection must be ruled out first.
Types of prostatitis
- Acute bacterial prostatitis: sudden fever, chills, pelvic pain and urinary symptoms. This is urgent and needs antibiotics.
- Chronic bacterial prostatitis: recurring urinary infections.
- Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS): ongoing pelvic pain for three months or more without infection. This is the most common type.
Symptoms of CP/CPPS
- Pain in the perineum, testicles, penis, lower back or lower abdomen
- Pain during or after ejaculation. See painful ejaculation causes.
- Urinary frequency or discomfort. See frequent urination in men.
- Erectile difficulties and low mood
Get checked first
An appropriately registered medical professional should rule out infection, especially if you have fever, burning or blood in the urine.
Natural remedies with evidence
Quercetin
A small placebo-controlled trial found quercetin (500 mg twice daily) improved symptoms in men with CP/CPPS.
Rye grass pollen extract
Trials suggest pollen extract may improve pain and quality of life.
Pelvic floor relaxation
Many men with CP/CPPS have tight pelvic floor muscles. Relaxation, stretching and physiotherapy help. See pelvic floor dysfunction in men.
Heat
Warm baths or a heat pad can ease muscle tension.
Stress management
Stress often worsens symptoms. Slow breathing, exercise and good sleep help.
Diet
Reduce bladder irritants such as alcohol, caffeine, spicy food and acidic drinks during flare-ups. Eat anti-inflammatory foods. See turmeric benefits for men.
Avoid long sitting
Take breaks and use a cushion. See cycling and erectile dysfunction.
