Causes of ED
Cycling and erectile dysfunction: is your saddle the problem?
Cycling is great for heart health, and many South African men ride for fitness or races like the Cape Town Cycle Tour. But long hours on the saddle can affect the area between the legs. Here is what to know about cycling and erectile dysfunction.
In short: Long periods on a narrow saddle can compress the perineum, the area between the scrotum and anus, temporarily reducing blood flow and pressing on nerves. This can cause numbness and, in some heavy riders, erection problems. Most recreational cyclists are not at higher risk, and simple changes to saddle, fit and riding habits help.
How cycling can affect erections
The perineum contains the pudendal nerve and arteries that supply the penis. A traditional narrow saddle puts body weight on this area. Prolonged pressure can:
- Temporarily reduce oxygen to penile tissue
- Irritate the pudendal nerve, causing numbness or tingling
- In some heavy, long-distance riders, contribute to erection difficulties
What research shows
Some studies have found higher rates of genital numbness in cyclists, especially those riding many hours a week. However, large studies of recreational riders have not found higher rates of erectile dysfunction, and the cardiovascular benefits of cycling help protect erections. The key factors appear to be riding time, saddle design and bike fit.
Warning signs
- Numbness or tingling in the penis or groin during or after rides
- Weaker erections after long rides
- Pain in the perineum
Temporary numbness that disappears quickly is common. If it persists or erections are affected, make changes and get advice.
Simple fixes
Choose the right saddle
Saddles with a central cut-out or channel, or noseless designs, reduce perineal pressure. A saddle should support your sit bones.
Get a proper bike fit
Saddle height, angle and handlebar position all affect pressure. A slight nose-down tilt may help.
Stand up regularly
Stand on the pedals every 10 to 15 minutes to restore blood flow.
Use padded shorts
Good chamois padding helps, but too much padding can increase pressure.
Build up gradually
Increase riding time slowly to let your body adapt.
Keep cycling
The heart benefits of cycling outweigh the risks for most men. Combine it with other exercise, such as walking and strength training. See exercises for erectile dysfunction and pelvic floor dysfunction in men.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.

Frequently asked questions
Can cycling cause erectile dysfunction?
Long hours on a narrow saddle can contribute to numbness and erection problems in some riders, but recreational cyclists are generally not at higher risk.
Why does my penis go numb when cycling?
Saddle pressure on the perineum can compress nerves and blood vessels. Changing saddle and fit usually helps.
What saddle is good for preventing numbness?
Saddles with a central cut-out or noseless designs reduce pressure on the perineum.
Should I stop cycling if I have ED?
Usually not. Cycling supports heart health. Adjust your saddle and riding habits and seek advice if problems persist.
How much does a consultation cost?
A consultation is R2,500, and any remedy costs are confirmed with you before you go ahead.
