Testosterone
Testosterone levels by age: what is normal for men
Men often hear that testosterone drops with age, but what does that mean in numbers? Here is a clear guide to testosterone levels by age and what matters more than the number itself.
In short: Most laboratories consider total testosterone of roughly 10 to 35 nmol/L (about 300 to 1,000 ng/dL) normal for adult men, though ranges vary. Levels peak in the late teens and 20s and then fall by about 1 percent a year from around 30 to 40. Many older men still have levels in the normal range. Symptoms matter as much as the number.
How testosterone changes over a lifetime
- Teens: rising sharply during puberty
- 20s: usually at their highest
- 30s and 40s: a slow decline of about 1 percent a year begins
- 50s and beyond: gradual decline continues; many men remain in the normal range
What is a normal level?
Reference ranges differ between laboratories, but total testosterone between about 10 and 35 nmol/L is commonly treated as normal for adult men. Levels below about 8 to 10 nmol/L, especially with symptoms, may be considered low. Free testosterone, the active portion, is also sometimes measured.
Why one test is not enough
Testosterone is highest in the morning and varies from day to day. Illness, poor sleep and heavy exercise can lower it temporarily. Diagnosis usually needs two early-morning tests and symptoms.
