Penile health
Numb penis: common causes and what to do
A numb penis can make sex less enjoyable and cause real worry. Most causes are linked to nerve pressure or circulation and can be improved.
In short: Penile numbness is commonly caused by pressure on nerves from cycling or long sitting, tight clothing, nerve damage from diabetes, low testosterone, some medicines, very frequent or rough masturbation and, after pelvic surgery, nerve injury. Temporary numbness after cycling usually settles. Ongoing or sudden numbness, especially with back pain or bladder problems, needs prompt assessment.
Common causes
Cycling and long sitting
Pressure on the perineum compresses nerves and blood vessels. See cycling and erectile dysfunction.
Tight underwear or trousers
Can reduce blood flow and sensation.
Diabetes
High blood sugar can damage nerves over time.
Low testosterone
May reduce sensitivity and desire. See testosterone levels by age.
Medicines
Some antidepressants can reduce genital sensation.
Rough or frequent masturbation
A tight grip can reduce sensitivity over time. See death grip syndrome.
Pelvic surgery or injury
Nerve injury can affect sensation.
Hard flaccid syndrome
Some men report numbness with a firm, shrunken penis. See hard flaccid syndrome.
Urgent warning signs
Seek emergency care for sudden numbness in the groin with back pain, leg weakness or loss of bladder or bowel control.
What helps
- Use a cut-out or noseless bike saddle and take breaks
- Wear looser underwear
- Stand up and move every hour
- Manage blood sugar
- Take a break from masturbation and use lubricant
