L-Citrulline for Erectile Dysfunction: What the Research Says
Can L-citrulline help erectile dysfunction? Learn how it supports nitric oxide and blood flow, what studies show, food sources and safety tips.
In short: L-citrulline for erectile dysfunction may offer modest support for men with mild ED. Your body turns citrulline into arginine, which helps make nitric oxide – the messenger that relaxes penile blood vessels. Evidence is limited, and it works most reliably alongside lifestyle changes.
What is L-citrulline?
L-citrulline is an amino acid your body makes naturally and also gets from food, especially watermelon. The kidneys convert citrulline into L-arginine, which is then used to make nitric oxide. Nitric oxide relaxes the smooth muscle in blood vessels, including those in the penis, allowing blood to flow in during arousal.
Why not just take L-arginine?
Much of the arginine you swallow is broken down in the gut and liver before it reaches your bloodstream. Citrulline survives digestion better, so it may raise arginine levels more reliably. You can read more in our guide to L-arginine benefits for men.
What do studies show?
A small study of men with mild ED found that L-citrulline improved erection hardness scores for some participants compared with placebo. Research is still limited – trials have been small and short. It is not a replacement for addressing the underlying cause of ED, such as blood pressure, blood sugar or smoking.
Food sources of citrulline
- Watermelon, especially the white rind – see watermelon as a natural Viagra
- Cucumber, pumpkin and other melons in smaller amounts
- Foods rich in nitrates, such as beetroot and leafy greens, support nitric oxide through a different pathway – see nitric oxide foods for erections
Who may benefit most?
Men with mild erection difficulties linked to circulation may notice a small benefit. Men with severe ED, diabetes-related nerve damage or psychological causes are less likely to see a meaningful change from citrulline alone.
Safety and interactions
L-citrulline is generally well tolerated in food amounts. Supplements can cause stomach upset in some men. Because it can lower blood pressure slightly, take care if you:
- take blood pressure medicines
- take nitrates for chest pain
- use erection medicines
- have low blood pressure
Always check with a qualified practitioner before combining supplements with prescribed medicines. Be cautious of “booster” products that list citrulline alongside unnamed ingredients – some unregistered products contain hidden medicines. See unregistered sex pills risks.
Make it part of a bigger plan
Citrulline is most useful as one piece of a circulation-friendly lifestyle: regular exercise, not smoking, less alcohol, good sleep and a diet rich in vegetables. Our guide on how to get harder erections naturally brings these together.

Frequently asked questions
Does L-citrulline really help erections?
Small studies suggest L-citrulline may modestly improve erection hardness in men with mild ED. It is not a substitute for addressing the underlying cause.
Is L-citrulline better than L-arginine?
Citrulline is absorbed more reliably and is converted into arginine in the body, so it may raise arginine levels more effectively than arginine supplements.
How long does L-citrulline take to work?
In studies, effects were measured after about a month of daily use. It is not an instant, on-demand option.
Can I get citrulline from food?
Yes. Watermelon, especially the white rind, is the richest food source.
Is L-citrulline safe with blood pressure medicine?
Citrulline can lower blood pressure slightly, so check with a qualified practitioner before combining it with blood pressure medicines, nitrates or erection medicines.
How much does a consultation cost?
A consultation is R2,500, and any remedy costs are confirmed with you before you go ahead.
