L-arginine for erectile dysfunction: benefits, dosage and safety
L-arginine is an amino acid the body uses to make nitric oxide, the molecule that triggers an erection. That makes L-arginine for erectile dysfunction one of the most logical natural supplements to consider.
In short: L-arginine is converted into nitric oxide, which relaxes the blood vessels of the penis. A review of trials found that L-arginine at 1.5 to 5 grams a day improved mild to moderate erectile dysfunction compared with placebo. L-citrulline, found in watermelon, raises arginine levels more efficiently. Both can lower blood pressure and interact with some medicines.
How L-arginine works
Your blood vessels use L-arginine to produce nitric oxide. Nitric oxide relaxes the smooth muscle in the penis so blood can flow in. In some men, especially those with blood vessel problems, nitric oxide production is reduced.
What the research shows
- A review of randomised trials found that L-arginine supplements improved erectile function scores in men with mild to moderate ED compared with placebo.
- Doses ranged from about 1.5 to 5 grams a day.
- Effects are more modest than prescription ED medicine and take several weeks.
- Some studies combined L-arginine with pycnogenol (pine bark extract), with encouraging results.
L-citrulline: an alternative
L-citrulline is converted to L-arginine in the kidneys. It is absorbed better and raises arginine levels more effectively than taking arginine itself. A small study found it improved erection hardness in men with mild ED. Watermelon is a natural source. See natural Viagra foods.
Food sources of arginine
Nuts, seeds, legumes, fish, chicken and dairy all contain arginine. A balanced diet provides a good base.
Side effects and interactions
- Common side effects include bloating, diarrhoea and nausea.
- L-arginine can lower blood pressure. Avoid combining it with blood pressure medicine, nitrates or ED medicine without advice.
- It is not recommended after a heart attack.
- People with a history of cold sores may notice more outbreaks.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.
