DHEA for Men: Benefits, Risks and What the Evidence Says
DHEA is a hormone supplement marketed for testosterone and libido. Learn what research shows for men, possible side effects and why caution matters.
In short: DHEA for men is often marketed as an anti-ageing or testosterone booster. Research shows little consistent benefit for libido, erections or testosterone in healthy men, and because it is a hormone, it can cause side effects. Get advice before taking it.
What is DHEA?
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone made mainly by the adrenal glands. The body converts it into other hormones, including testosterone and oestrogen. DHEA levels peak in early adulthood and decline with age, which is why supplements are marketed for “anti-ageing”.
What does research show?
Testosterone
DHEA supplements raise testosterone only slightly in some older men, and often raise oestrogen too.
Libido and erections
Some small studies suggested benefits for erectile function in men with low DHEA, but larger, better-designed trials have generally not found meaningful improvements in healthy men.
Muscle, bone and mood
Results are mixed and modest. Exercise and diet have far greater effects.
Possible side effects
Because DHEA is a hormone, it can affect the body in several ways:
- Acne and oily skin
- Hair loss
- Breast tenderness or enlargement – see gynecomastia
- Changes in cholesterol
- Mood changes or irritability
- Possible effects on prostate tissue
Men with prostate conditions, liver disease, heart disease or mood disorders should avoid DHEA unless advised by an appropriately registered medical professional.
Sport and DHEA
DHEA is on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list. Athletes should not use it.
Hormone products and our scope
Our clinic does not prescribe hormones or hormone therapy. If you suspect low testosterone, testing and any hormone treatment should be handled by an appropriately registered medical professional. See low testosterone symptoms in men.
Natural ways to support healthy hormones
- Strength training and regular activity – see exercises to increase testosterone
- Seven to nine hours of sleep – see testosterone and sleep
- A healthy weight
- Managing stress – see cortisol and testosterone

Be wary of “T-boosters”
Many testosterone-boosting products combine DHEA with other ingredients and bold claims. Some unregistered products contain hidden substances. Read unregistered sex pills risks.
