Vegan Diet and Testosterone: Facts for Plant-Based Men
Does a vegan or plant-based diet lower testosterone? Learn what research shows, benefits for erections, nutrients to watch like B12 and zinc, and tips.
In short: Vegan diet and testosterone: research suggests plant-based diets do not meaningfully lower testosterone in healthy men. Plant-rich eating is linked to better blood vessel health and lower ED risk, but vegans need to plan for B12, zinc, iodine and protein.
Does going vegan lower testosterone?
Large studies have found little difference in testosterone between vegans, vegetarians and meat-eaters. Concerns about soy are common, but research shows normal amounts of soy foods do not lower testosterone in men. See soy and testosterone.
Plant-based diets and erections
Plant-rich diets – full of vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts and whole grains – are linked to:
- Better blood vessel function
- Lower blood pressure and cholesterol
- Lower risk of type 2 diabetes
Some studies suggest men who eat more plant foods have a lower risk of erectile dysfunction. The quality of the diet matters: a vegan diet built on chips, white bread and sugary drinks won’t help.
Nutrients to watch
Vitamin B12
B12 is found almost only in animal foods. Vegans need fortified foods or a supplement. Low B12 can damage nerves. See vitamin B12 and erectile dysfunction.
Zinc
Zinc supports testosterone and sperm. Plant sources include pumpkin seeds, legumes and nuts, but absorption is lower. See zinc benefits for men sexually and pumpkin seeds benefits for men.
Protein
Combine legumes, soy, grains, nuts and seeds through the day to support muscle.
Omega-3 fats
Flaxseed and walnuts provide plant omega-3, but conversion is limited. Algae-based omega-3 is an option. See flaxseed benefits for men.
Iodine, iron, calcium and vitamin D
Use iodised salt, eat leafy greens and legumes, and get some sunlight. See iron deficiency and erectile dysfunction and vitamin D and testosterone.
Tips for plant-based men
- Build meals around beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu and whole grains
- Add a handful of nuts or seeds daily
- Use B12-fortified foods or a supplement
- Don’t rely on ultra-processed vegan foods
- Keep active with strength training
