Food for men
Flaxseed benefits for men: omega-3, prostate and testosterone questions
Flaxseed, also called linseed, is a small seed with big nutritional value. Men often ask whether it affects testosterone. Here is a balanced look at flaxseed benefits for men.
In short: Flaxseed is rich in plant omega-3 (ALA), fibre and lignans. Studies show it may help lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Lignans have weak hormone-like effects, and a few small studies found lower testosterone with flaxseed, but evidence is limited and the effect in normal food amounts appears small. One to two tablespoons of ground flaxseed a day is a common amount.
What is in flaxseed?
Flaxseed provides alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), soluble and insoluble fibre, protein and lignans, plant compounds with antioxidant and weak oestrogen-like activity.
Benefits for men
Blood pressure
Several studies found that eating ground flaxseed daily lowered blood pressure, which protects blood vessels involved in erections. See high blood pressure and erectile dysfunction.
Cholesterol
Flaxseed fibre can help lower LDL cholesterol. See high cholesterol and erectile dysfunction.
Digestion and weight
Fibre supports regularity and fullness.
Prostate
A small study in men awaiting prostate surgery found flaxseed slowed tumour cell growth markers. This is early research, not a treatment.
Flaxseed and testosterone
Because lignans have weak hormone-like effects, men worry about testosterone. One small study in men with prostate cancer, using a low-fat diet plus flaxseed, found lower testosterone, and a case report described low testosterone in a woman taking flax supplements. Larger studies in healthy men have not shown a meaningful drop with normal food amounts. If testosterone is a concern, moderate amounts are sensible.
How to use flaxseed
- Use ground flaxseed, as whole seeds pass through undigested.
- Add 1 to 2 tablespoons to oats, yoghurt or smoothies.
- Store ground flaxseed in the fridge to prevent it going rancid.
- Drink plenty of water to avoid bloating.
Other plant omega-3 sources
Walnuts and chia seeds also provide ALA. For EPA and DHA, oily fish is the main source. See omega-3 benefits for men and walnuts benefits for men.
Who should be careful?
Flaxseed can affect blood sugar and blood clotting, so check if you take diabetes medicines or blood thinners. A naturopath can help you decide what suits your goals.
