Blood in urine in men: why it always needs checking
Seeing blood in your urine is frightening. It is often caused by something treatable, but it should always be checked by an appropriately registered medical professional.
In short: Blood in urine (haematuria) can appear pink, red or cola-coloured, or be found only on a test. Common causes in men include urinary tract infections, kidney or bladder stones, an enlarged prostate, prostatitis and vigorous exercise. Less often it is caused by bladder, kidney or prostate cancer. Visible blood in urine, even once, should be assessed promptly.
What it can look like
- Pink, red or brown urine
- Clots in urine
- No visible change but blood found on a urine test
Some foods such as beetroot and some medicines can colour urine red, but do not assume this.
Common causes
- Urinary tract infection, see UTI in men
- Kidney or bladder stones
- Enlarged prostate, see enlarged prostate natural remedies
- Prostatitis
- Intense exercise
- Injury
Less common but important causes
- Bladder cancer, more common in smokers
- Kidney cancer
- Prostate cancer

Avoid unregistered “enhancement” products sold online or at markets, as SAHPRA has warned that some contain hidden ingredients.
