Causes
Can dehydration cause erectile dysfunction?
In a hot South African summer, many men drink far less water than they need. So can dehydration cause erectile dysfunction? It can play a part, especially alongside heat, alcohol and tiredness.
In short: Dehydration lowers blood volume, which can make erections harder to get and keep, and it causes tiredness, headaches and low mood that dampen desire. It is rarely the only cause of ongoing ED, but it often makes things worse, especially with alcohol, heat and exercise. Drinking enough water through the day is a simple, useful step.
How dehydration affects erections
Less blood volume
An erection needs a good flow of blood into the penis. When you are dehydrated, blood volume falls and circulation is less efficient.
Tiredness and headaches
Even mild dehydration causes fatigue and poor concentration, which reduce desire.
Stress hormones
Dehydration can raise the body’s stress response.
When dehydration is most likely
- Hot weather and outdoor work
- Heavy exercise without enough fluids
- Drinking alcohol, which makes you lose more water
- Too many caffeinated or energy drinks
- Illness with vomiting, diarrhoea or fever
Signs you are dehydrated
- Dark yellow urine
- Thirst and a dry mouth
- Headaches or dizziness
- Tiredness
Hydration tips
- Aim for pale yellow urine through the day
- Drink a glass of water with each meal and after exercise
- Alternate alcoholic drinks with water
- Eat water-rich foods such as watermelon, cucumber and oranges
- Carry a water bottle in hot weather
Is it ever the main cause?
Ongoing ED is usually caused by circulation, hormone, nerve or psychological factors. Dehydration can make all of these worse. If your erections have weakened, read how to know if you have erectile dysfunction.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.

Frequently asked questions
Can not drinking enough water affect erections?
It can. Dehydration lowers blood volume and energy, which can make erections weaker.
How much water should a man drink?
Needs vary with heat and activity, but aim for pale yellow urine through the day.
Does alcohol dehydrate you and affect erections?
Yes. Alcohol increases water loss and also directly affects nerves and erections.
Will drinking more water fix ED?
It helps if dehydration is part of the problem, but ongoing ED usually has other causes too.
How much does a consultation cost?
A consultation is R2,500, and any remedy costs are confirmed with you before you go ahead.
