Prostate health
Does ejaculating help the prostate?
Headlines often claim that regular ejaculation protects against prostate cancer. So does ejaculating help the prostate? The research is interesting, but not the whole story.
In short: A large Harvard study following about 32,000 men found that those who ejaculated 21 or more times a month had a lower risk of prostate cancer than men who ejaculated four to seven times a month. This shows an association, not proof of cause. Ejaculation is one small piece of prostate health, alongside diet, weight, exercise and regular checks after 40 to 50.
What the research found
The Health Professionals Follow-up Study reported about a 20 percent lower prostate cancer risk in men with the highest ejaculation frequency. Other studies have found similar but smaller associations.
Why it might help
Theories include clearing substances from the prostate and reducing inflammation, but the exact reason is unknown.
What it does not prove
- It does not show ejaculation prevents cancer
- Men who ejaculate more may also differ in health or lifestyle
- It is not a substitute for screening
Ejaculation and other prostate conditions
Prostatitis
Some men with chronic prostatitis report relief with regular ejaculation, but painful ejaculation should be checked. See prostatitis natural remedies.
Enlarged prostate
Ejaculation does not shrink an enlarged prostate. See enlarged prostate natural remedies.
Other ways to look after your prostate
- Eat plenty of vegetables, tomatoes and legumes
- Keep a healthy weight
- Exercise regularly
- Limit red and processed meat
- Discuss PSA testing from around 40 to 50, earlier with family history, see PSA test explained
