Fenugreek for men: testosterone, libido and sexual health benefits
Fenugreek seeds are a common spice in South African kitchens, especially in curries. As a supplement, fenugreek is widely marketed to men for drive and testosterone. Here is what the research says about fenugreek for men.
In short: Several small trials found that fenugreek seed extract improved libido and sexual satisfaction in men, and some reported modest testosterone increases, although results are mixed. Fenugreek may also help blood sugar control. It is generally safe as food, but supplements can lower blood sugar and interact with blood thinners.
What is fenugreek?
Fenugreek (*Trigonella foenum-graecum*) is a herb whose seeds are used as a spice and in traditional medicine. The seeds contain saponins, including furostanolic saponins, which are thought to play a role in its effects on men.
What the research shows
Libido and sexual function
Several randomised trials in healthy men found that fenugreek extract (often 500 to 600 mg a day) improved self-reported libido, arousal and satisfaction compared with placebo over 6 to 12 weeks.
Testosterone
Some studies reported modest increases in free or total testosterone, while others found no significant change. Overall, the evidence for raising testosterone is inconsistent.
Blood sugar
Fenugreek has evidence for lowering blood sugar in people with diabetes. Because high blood sugar damages blood vessels and nerves, better control supports sexual health.
How to use fenugreek
- As food: add seeds or ground fenugreek to curries, stews and breads.
- As tea: soak a teaspoon of seeds in hot water for 10 minutes.
- As a supplement: choose a registered, standardised extract and follow the label.
Side effects
- Diarrhoea, bloating and wind are common at higher doses.
- Sweat and urine may smell like maple syrup, which is harmless.
- It can lower blood sugar, so men on diabetes medicine must be careful.
- It may increase bleeding risk with blood thinners.
- People allergic to peanuts or chickpeas may react to fenugreek.
Is fenugreek worth trying?
Fenugreek may be a reasonable option for men with mildly low desire, especially as part of a broader plan. It will not fix low drive caused by stress, poor sleep, relationship issues or medicines.
