Ginseng for erectile dysfunction: benefits, evidence and dosage
Of all the herbs promoted for erections, ginseng for erectile dysfunction has the most research behind it. Korean red ginseng in particular has been tested in several clinical trials. Here is what they found, and how to use it safely.
In short: Korean red ginseng (Panax ginseng) is one of the few herbs with clinical trials for erectile dysfunction. Reviews suggest it may modestly improve erectile function compared with placebo, although studies are small and vary in quality. Typical trial doses were 900 mg two or three times a day. It can interact with blood thinners, diabetes medicine and stimulants.
What is ginseng?
“Ginseng” covers several plants. Asian or Korean ginseng (*Panax ginseng*) is the one studied for erections. Red ginseng is steamed and dried, which changes its active compounds, called ginsenosides. American ginseng and “Siberian ginseng” are different plants with less evidence for ED.
How ginseng may help erections
Ginsenosides appear to support nitric oxide release in blood vessels, helping the smooth muscle of the penis relax so blood can flow in. Ginseng may also reduce fatigue and support mood, both relevant to sexual function.
What the research shows
- Several randomised trials of Korean red ginseng in men with mild to moderate ED reported better erection scores than placebo.
- A systematic review concluded that ginseng may produce a small improvement in erectile function, but the quality of evidence was low to moderate.
- Results are more modest than with prescription ED medicine, and not every man responds.
Typical dosage
Studies commonly used 900 mg of Korean red ginseng two or three times a day for about 8 to 12 weeks. Many experts suggest taking breaks, for example two to three weeks off after a few months of use.
Side effects and interactions
- Trouble sleeping, headache, stomach upset and raised heart rate are the most common side effects.
- Ginseng may affect blood sugar, so men on diabetes medicine need to be careful.
- It may interact with blood thinners such as warfarin, some antidepressants and stimulants including caffeine.
- Avoid it if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure.
Choosing a product
Quality varies widely. Choose a registered product that states the type of ginseng and its standardised ginsenoside content. Avoid “sex pills” that claim to contain ginseng alongside unnamed ingredients, as some have been found to contain hidden drugs.
Where ginseng fits in a plan
Ginseng can be a useful addition for some men, but it is most useful on top of the basics: exercise, healthy weight, good sleep and less alcohol. A naturopath can tell you whether ginseng suits your health and medicines. See also home remedies for erectile dysfunction and our erectile dysfunction page.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.
