How to Choose the Right Condom Size and Fit
A good condom fit improves comfort and protection and helps you stay hard. Learn how to measure, signs a condom is too tight or loose, and tips for use.
In short: Choosing the right condom size matters for comfort, protection and keeping your erection. Condoms that are too tight can feel uncomfortable and reduce sensation; condoms that are too loose can slip off. Measuring your erect girth is the simplest way to find a good fit.
Why fit matters
Many men use whatever condom is closest to hand. But a poor fit can lead to:
- Discomfort or squeezing
- Loss of erection – see why do I lose my erection when putting on a condom?
- Condoms slipping off or breaking
- Less pleasure, which makes some men avoid condoms altogether
Girth matters more than length
Most condoms are long enough for most men – extra length simply stays rolled at the base. Girth (the distance around the penis) is the main factor in how a condom feels.
How to measure
1. When erect, wrap a soft tape measure or piece of string around the thickest part of the shaft.
2. Note the measurement in centimetres.
3. Compare with the “nominal width” on condom packaging (often listed in millimetres). Brands label sizes as snug, regular or large.
Roughly:
- Snug/slim fit: smaller girth
- Regular: most men
- Large: larger girth
Average penis sizes are smaller than many men think – see average penis size.
Signs a condom is too tight
- Feels uncomfortably squeezing
- Leaves a red ring at the base
- You lose your erection soon after putting it on
- It’s hard to roll down
Signs it’s too loose
- Wrinkles or bunches along the shaft
- Slips during sex or when you withdraw
Tips for using condoms
- Check the expiry date and packaging
- Pinch the tip to leave space for semen
- Roll it on before any genital contact
- Use water- or silicone-based lube on the outside – see lubricant guide for men
- Hold the base when withdrawing
- Use a new condom every time
Practise on your own
Putting on a condom while alone helps you get quicker and more confident, which reduces anxiety during sex. See first-time sex nerves.
