Herbs for men
Maca root benefits for men: libido, energy and fertility
Maca is a root vegetable from the Andes that is popular as a powder for energy and sex drive. Men searching for maca root benefits for men will find big claims online. The research is promising in places, but more modest.
In short: Maca (Lepidium meyenii) has small clinical trials suggesting it may improve sexual desire and mildly support erectile function and sperm quality. Unlike many “boosters”, maca does not appear to raise testosterone. It is generally well tolerated as a food. Most studies used 1.5 to 3 grams a day for 6 to 12 weeks.
What is maca?
Maca is a turnip-like root grown high in the Peruvian Andes, traditionally eaten as food and used for stamina and fertility. It is sold as yellow, red or black maca powder or capsules.
What the research shows
Libido
Several small randomised trials found that men taking maca reported greater sexual desire than men on placebo, usually after 8 to 12 weeks. A review concluded the evidence is encouraging but limited by small study sizes.
Erections
One small trial in men with mild erectile dysfunction found a modest improvement in erection scores and sexual wellbeing with maca. It is not a treatment for moderate or severe ED.
Sperm quality
Some studies suggest maca may improve sperm count and motility. See how to increase sperm count naturally.
Testosterone
Interestingly, studies have not found that maca raises testosterone. Any benefit to desire seems to work through other pathways.
Energy and mood
Some users report more energy and better mood, and small studies hint at benefits for mood, but evidence is limited.
How to take maca
- Maca powder has a malty, nutty taste. Add 1 to 3 teaspoons to smoothies, porridge or yoghurt.
- Gelatinised maca is pre-cooked and easier to digest.
- Give it 8 to 12 weeks before judging the effect.
Safety
Maca is a food and generally safe. Some people get stomach upset. Because it is a cruciferous vegetable, men with thyroid conditions should check first. Buy from reputable sources, as some “maca” sex pills have been found to contain undeclared medicines.
Is maca right for you?
Maca may suit men with low desire who want a gentle, food-based option. If low libido comes with fatigue, low mood or weaker erections, it is worth looking for the underlying cause. Read low libido in men: causes and treatment or speak to a naturopath for a personalised plan.
