Causes of ED
Medications that can cause erectile dysfunction: what every man should know
If your erections changed after starting a new medicine, you are not imagining it. Several common medications can cause erectile dysfunction or lower libido. The key is knowing which ones, and never stopping a prescribed medicine on your own.
In short: Some blood pressure medicines, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medicines, antihistamines, stomach acid medicines, prostate medicines and opioid painkillers can affect erections, libido or ejaculation. If you notice changes after starting a medicine, do not stop it suddenly. Speak to the professional who prescribed it, as alternatives often exist.
Common medicines linked with erection problems
Blood pressure medicines
Thiazide diuretics and some beta-blockers are most often linked with ED. Other types, such as ACE inhibitors and ARBs, are less likely to affect erections. Remember that high blood pressure itself also causes ED. See high blood pressure and erectile dysfunction.
Antidepressants
SSRIs and SNRIs commonly reduce libido, delay ejaculation and can affect erections. Some other antidepressants have fewer sexual side effects.
Anti-anxiety and sleeping medicines
Benzodiazepines can reduce desire and arousal.
Antihistamines
Some older antihistamines, used for allergies or sleep, can affect sexual function.
Stomach acid medicines
Some H2 blockers, particularly cimetidine, have been linked with ED.
Prostate medicines
Medicines for an enlarged prostate, such as finasteride and dutasteride, can reduce libido and affect ejaculation. Some alpha-blockers reduce semen volume.
Opioid painkillers
Long-term use lowers testosterone and libido.
Others
Anti-epileptic medicines, some anti-psychotics, hormone treatments and heavy use of recreational drugs can also affect sexual function.
What to do if you suspect your medicine
- Do not stop or change a prescribed medicine yourself. Stopping some medicines suddenly is dangerous.
- Note when the change started and whether it affects desire, erections or ejaculation.
- Speak to the professional who prescribed it. A dose change or a different medicine may help.
- Ask your pharmacist about side effects listed for your medicine.
Other causes to consider
The condition being treated, such as depression, diabetes or heart disease, may itself cause ED. Lifestyle factors also play a role. Read what is erectile dysfunction.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.
