Vasectomy and sexual function: what changes and what does not
Many men considering a vasectomy worry about one thing above all: will it affect my sex life? Here are the facts about vasectomy and sexual function.
In short: A vasectomy blocks the tubes that carry sperm from the testicles. It does not affect testosterone, erections, sex drive or the feeling of orgasm, and semen looks almost the same because sperm make up only a small part of it. A few men have ongoing testicular pain or anxiety afterwards that can affect sex, and support is available for both.
What a vasectomy does
A vasectomy cuts or seals the vas deferens, the tubes that carry sperm. The testicles keep making sperm, which are absorbed by the body. Men’s Health Clinics does not perform vasectomies; it is a surgical procedure done by an appropriately registered medical professional.
Erections and libido
Erections depend on blood flow and nerves, not the vas deferens, so a vasectomy does not affect them. Testosterone is released into the blood, not through the tubes, so hormone levels and libido stay the same.
Ejaculation and orgasm
Semen is made mostly by the prostate and seminal vesicles. Sperm make up only around 2 to 5 percent of the volume, so most men notice no difference in amount or sensation.
Recovery
Most men return to normal activity within a few days. Sex is usually avoided for about a week. It takes around three months and about 20 ejaculations to clear sperm, and a semen test confirms when you are sperm-free. Use other contraception until then.
Possible problems
Ongoing testicular pain
A small number of men have lasting discomfort after a vasectomy, which can make sex less enjoyable. See testicular pain causes.
Anxiety
Some men worry that they are less of a man after the procedure, which can affect confidence and erections. These feelings are understandable and usually ease with time and information. Read performance anxiety in men.
Swelling or bruising
Common in the first few days and usually settles.
Sexual health benefits some men notice
Many couples report more relaxed sex without the worry of pregnancy.
STI protection
A vasectomy does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Use condoms if you are at risk.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.
- How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
- Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
- Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?
If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.
