What is a normal erection? A plain guide for men

Many men quietly wonder whether their erections are normal. Knowing what a normal erection looks and feels like helps you spot real changes and stop worrying about the rest.

In short: A normal erection is firm enough for penetration and lasts long enough for satisfying sex. Hardness, angle and how quickly it appears vary from man to man and change with age, tiredness and mood. Occasional softer erections are normal. Regularly struggling to get or keep an erection firm enough for sex, for more than a few weeks, is worth looking into.

The erection hardness scale

Clinicians often use a simple four-point scale:

  • 1: the penis is larger but not hard
  • 2: hard but not hard enough for penetration
  • 3: hard enough for penetration but not completely hard
  • 4: completely hard and fully rigid

Most men are happy at 3 or 4. Regularly sitting at 1 or 2 suggests erectile dysfunction.

How long should an erection last?

Long enough for you and your partner to enjoy sex. There is no set number of minutes. It is normal for an erection to soften slightly during long sex, position changes or distraction, and return with stimulation. See losing erection during sex.

What angle is normal?

Anything from pointing slightly down to pointing up is normal. Angle tends to drop with age as ligaments relax. A new bend with pain or a lump is different and worth checking, see is a curved penis normal.

Morning and night-time erections

Healthy men have three to five erections during sleep. Waking with an erection is a good sign that blood flow and nerves are working. If morning erections have disappeared, see how to know if you have erectile dysfunction.

Normal changes with age

  • Erections may need more direct touch
  • They may be a little less firm
  • Recovery time after ejaculation gets longer

Read male sex drive by age.

When to get help

  • Erections are softer most of the time for more than a few weeks
  • You lose erections before or during sex regularly
  • Morning erections have stopped
  • You also have chest pain, diabetes or high blood pressure

Private self-check: 5 quick questions

Answer these honestly before you try anything new or book. They help you describe what is happening and get more from your first consultation.

  1. How often can you get and keep an erection firm enough for sex: almost always, most of the time, sometimes, or rarely?
  2. Do you still notice morning or night-time erections?
  3. Have stress, poor sleep, alcohol, smoking or long hours increased recently?
  4. Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
  5. Has your interest in sex dropped noticeably over the past year?

If you answered “sometimes” or “rarely” to the first question, a consultation is a sensible next step. Morning erections that still happen are often a reassuring sign that lifestyle, stress or confidence are playing a part, which natural support can address well. A yes to question four means any remedy needs checking for interactions first.

What happens at your first consultation
