Shilajit benefits for men: testosterone, energy and safety warnings
Shilajit is a sticky, tar-like resin from the Himalayas and other mountain ranges that has become hugely popular online. Here is what we know about shilajit benefits for men, and the safety issues you need to know first.
In short: Shilajit contains fulvic acid and minerals. One small trial found purified shilajit raised testosterone modestly in healthy middle-aged men, and another found improved sperm count in infertile men. Evidence is limited. Raw or poorly processed shilajit can contain heavy metals, fungi and other contaminants, so only purified, tested products should be considered.
What is shilajit?
Shilajit forms over centuries as plant material decomposes in rock layers. It is used in Ayurvedic medicine as a rejuvenating tonic. Its main active component is thought to be fulvic acid.
What research shows
Testosterone
In a small 90-day study, healthy men aged 45 to 55 taking 250 mg of purified shilajit twice daily had higher total testosterone than men on placebo. Larger studies are needed.
Sperm
A small study in infertile men found purified shilajit improved sperm count and motility over 90 days. See signs of male infertility.
Energy and fatigue
Animal studies suggest shilajit may reduce fatigue. Human evidence is limited.
Erections and libido
There are no good human trials on erectile dysfunction.
Safety warnings
- Contamination: raw shilajit can contain heavy metals (lead, arsenic, mercury), free radicals, mould and other impurities. Only purified, laboratory-tested products should be used.
- Fake products: much of what is sold online may not be genuine shilajit, or may be mixed with other substances.
- Iron: shilajit may raise iron levels, so men with haemochromatosis should avoid it.
- Gout: it may raise uric acid in some people.
- It may lower blood pressure and interact with blood pressure medicines.
Is shilajit worth trying?
For men with symptoms of low testosterone, start with the foundations that have stronger evidence: sleep, weight, strength training and less alcohol. See how to increase testosterone naturally and low testosterone in young men. If you are considering shilajit, speak to a naturopath first. We can advise on safer, better-supported natural options and refer you for blood tests when needed.
