Lasting longer
Edging technique: can it help you last longer in bed?
Edging is widely discussed online as a way to build stamina. It is closely related to the stop-start technique used for premature ejaculation. Here is how the edging technique works and how to use it sensibly.
In short: Edging means bringing yourself close to orgasm, then stopping or slowing until the urge passes, and repeating. Practised regularly, it can help you recognise your point of no return and improve control, which is the principle behind the stop-start technique for premature ejaculation. It is safe, but should not cause pain, and very long sessions can cause temporary discomfort.
How edging works
Most men with premature ejaculation struggle to recognise the build-up before the “point of no return”. Edging trains awareness of arousal levels so you can pause in time.
Edging vs stop-start
The stop-start technique, developed for premature ejaculation, is a structured form of edging. See home remedies for premature ejaculation.
How to practise
1. Start alone, during masturbation, using lubricant and a relaxed grip.
2. Rate your arousal from 1 to 10.
3. When you reach about 7 or 8, stop or slow down completely.
4. Breathe slowly until arousal drops to about 4 or 5.
5. Repeat three or four times before allowing orgasm.
6. Practise two or three times a week for several weeks.
7. Bring the technique into partnered sex, with your partner’s support.
Tips
- Combine with slow belly breathing.
- Add pelvic floor training. See Kegel exercises for men.
- Vary your grip and speed to avoid relying on intense stimulation. See death grip syndrome.
- Focus on sensation rather than porn.
Common mistakes
- Using a very tight grip or fast pace, which trains quick climax.
- Pushing through pain.
- Edging for very long periods, which can cause temporary testicle ache. See blue balls.
- Turning it into another source of performance pressure.
Is edging safe?
Yes, for most men. It does not harm the prostate or fertility. Stop if you feel pain.

- Do you usually ejaculate sooner than you or your partner would like?
- Has this always been the case, or did it start recently?
- Do you feel you have little or no control over when you ejaculate?
- Is it causing stress, avoidance or tension in your relationship?
- Do you also have trouble getting or keeping an erection?
A yes to questions one, three or four suggests a consultation would help. Problems that started recently, or that come with erection difficulties, are worth discussing early, because the cause often guides the most effective natural plan.
