In short: The testicles make new sperm every day, so sperm numbers recover within a few days after ejaculation. However, each sperm takes about 64 to 74 days to develop, plus around 10 to 14 days to mature in the epididymis, roughly 2 to 3 months in total. That is why lifestyle changes usually take about three months to show in a semen test.

The sperm production cycle

Sperm are made in the seminiferous tubules of the testicles in a process called spermatogenesis. It takes roughly two and a half months for a cell to become a mature sperm. Sperm then travel to the epididymis, where they gain the ability to swim.

After ejaculation

Sperm count in the next ejaculate is lower if you ejaculate several times a day. For most men, numbers recover within two to five days. For couples trying to conceive, sex every one to two days around ovulation is usually recommended.

Why the three-month window matters

Any change you make today, good or bad, affects sperm that will be ejaculated about three months from now. This includes:

A high fever can lower sperm quality for up to three months.

How to support new sperm

  • Eat a varied diet rich in fruit, vegetables, nuts, fish and whole grains
  • Get enough zinc, selenium, folate and antioxidants
  • Exercise regularly but avoid overtraining
  • Sleep seven to eight hours
  • Manage stress, see can stress cause low sperm count

Does abstaining increase sperm?

Short abstinence of two to five days increases volume and count. Longer than about a week can lower motility and increase DNA damage. See how often should a man ejaculate.
