Can stress cause low sperm count? How stress affects male fertility
Trying for a baby can be stressful, and stress itself may make it harder. Research suggests stress can affect sperm count, quality and the hormones that drive sperm production.
In short: Studies link psychological stress, especially life stress and job loss, with lower sperm concentration, motility and normal shape. Stress raises cortisol, which can lower testosterone, and often leads to poor sleep, alcohol use and unhealthy eating, which also harm sperm. Managing stress, sleeping well and staying active may support better sperm health.
What the research shows
A US study of more than 190 men found that those who reported more life stress had lower sperm concentration and motility and more abnormal sperm. Men who had recently lost their job also had poorer sperm quality. Job stress alone showed less effect.
How stress affects sperm
Hormones
Ongoing stress raises cortisol, which can reduce the hormones that signal the testicles to make testosterone and sperm.
Oxidative stress
Stress increases free radicals that can damage sperm DNA.
Lifestyle knock-on effects
- Poor or short sleep
- More alcohol and smoking
- Less exercise and more takeaway food
- Lower sex drive and less frequent sex
Fertility stress
The pressure of trying to conceive can affect libido, erections and ejaculation, making timing harder. Many couples find this cycle frustrating.
Natural ways to reduce stress
- Brisk walking or exercise most days
- Slow breathing or meditation for 10 minutes a day
- A regular sleep routine
- Limiting alcohol and caffeine
- Talking to your partner, friends or a counsellor
- Making sex about closeness, not just ovulation dates
Support sperm alongside
- A varied diet with fruit, vegetables, nuts, fish and whole grains
- Keeping the testicles cool, see does heat affect sperm
- Avoiding smoking and heavy drinking, see alcohol and sperm quality
Remember that sperm take about three months to develop, see how long does sperm take to regenerate.
