Fertility
Age and male fertility: what changes after 40
Men can father children later in life, but that does not mean age has no effect. Research on age and male fertility shows that sperm quality and the time it takes to conceive change gradually.
In short: Men keep producing sperm throughout life, but from around 40 sperm motility, volume and DNA quality tend to decline. Couples with an older male partner may take longer to conceive and have a slightly higher risk of miscarriage. Lifestyle factors such as weight, alcohol, smoking and heat matter more as men age, and many can be improved.
Do men have a biological clock?
Not in the same way women do. Sperm production continues into old age. However, studies show a gradual decline in several measures of fertility, usually from around 40 to 45.
What changes with age
- Lower semen volume
- Slower sperm movement
- More sperm with DNA damage
- Lower testosterone and libido
- Erection and ejaculation changes that affect timing
What it means for conception
Research suggests couples where the man is over 45 may take longer to conceive than couples where he is under 25. There is also a small increase in the risk of miscarriage and some rare conditions in the baby as paternal age rises. Overall risks remain low.
Health conditions that matter
Diabetes, high blood pressure, prostate problems and some medicines become more common with age and can affect fertility and sexual function.
