Are Penis Rings Safe? Erection Rings Explained
Penis rings (erection or constriction rings) can help some men keep an erection. Learn how they work, safety rules, risks and who should avoid them.
In short: Are penis rings safe? Used correctly, erection rings can help some men keep an erection by slowing blood leaving the penis. They must be the right size, worn for no more than 30 minutes, and removed straight away if there is pain, numbness or colour change.
What is a penis ring?
A penis ring (also called an erection ring, constriction ring or cock ring) is a band worn around the base of the penis, sometimes also behind the scrotum. It gently restricts blood flowing out of the penis, helping maintain an erection. Rings are made of silicone, rubber or adjustable material.
Who might find them useful?
- Men who can get an erection but lose it too soon
- Men with mild venous leak, where blood drains out too quickly
- Some men using a vacuum pump – see penis pump
They do not create an erection on their own, and they are not a treatment for the underlying causes of ED.
Safety rules
- Choose the right size: snug, not painful. Adjustable or stretchy silicone rings are safest.
- Never wear for more than 30 minutes.
- Never sleep with a ring on.
- Avoid metal or rigid rings – they can be very hard to remove if swelling occurs.
- Use lubricant when putting it on and taking it off – see lubricant guide for men.
- Remove immediately if you feel pain, numbness or coldness, or notice the penis turning blue or purple.
Risks of misuse
- Bruising and broken blood vessels
- Nerve damage and numbness
- Pain or difficulty ejaculating
- A stuck ring – which can be a medical emergency
If a ring won’t come off, go to an emergency department straight away. Don’t try to cut off a metal ring yourself.
Who should avoid penis rings
- Men taking blood-thinning medicines
- Men with bleeding disorders or sickle cell disease
- Men with reduced genital sensation (for example from diabetes) who may not feel warning signs – see numb penis causes
- Anyone with an erection lasting more than four hours in the past – see priapism
Address the cause too
Losing erections often has a cause worth addressing – stress, alcohol, circulation, blood sugar or hormones. See losing erection during sex and how to get harder erections naturally.
