Penis pumps: what they do, how to use one safely, and what to expect
A penis pump is one of the most common devices men buy for size or erection problems. Used correctly, a quality pump is generally low risk and can help some men get an erection. It is important to know what it can and cannot do before you buy one.
In short: A penis pump uses a vacuum to draw blood into the penis, creating a temporary erection or fuller look. It does not create lasting growth. Used with a constriction ring, it can help some men with erection problems. Avoid high pressure, long sessions and cheap devices without a pressure limiter.
How a penis pump works
A pump is a clear cylinder placed over the penis, with a hand or battery pump that removes air. The vacuum draws blood into the penis, causing it to swell and become erect. A soft ring placed at the base can help keep the erection for sex.
Does a penis pump increase size?
Only temporarily. The swelling usually fades within a few hours. We are not aware of good evidence that regular pumping creates lasting growth. For an honest look at what can change, see our guide to ways to enlarge penis size.
Can a pump help with erection problems?
Yes, for some men. Vacuum devices are a recognised way to achieve an erection for sex. They work well alongside steps that support healthy erections, such as better circulation, less alcohol, stopping smoking and good sleep. See our erectile dysfunction treatment and weak erection support.
How to use a pump safely
- Choose a device with a pressure limiter or gauge
- Use plenty of water-based lubricant for a good seal
- Pump gently and stop if you feel pain or numbness
- Limit sessions to about 10 to 15 minutes
- Do not leave a constriction ring on for more than 30 minutes
- Never fall asleep with a ring on
Who should be careful
- Men who take blood-thinning medicines
- Men with bleeding or clotting problems
- Men with sickle cell disease
- Men with a bend, lump or pain in the penis
If any of these apply, speak to an appropriately registered medical professional before using a pump.
Possible side effects
- Bruising or small red spots under the skin
- Temporary numbness or coldness
- Discomfort during ejaculation with a ring on
A natural approach alongside
A pump treats the symptom, not the cause. Our naturopaths look at what is behind weaker erections or size worries and build a natural plan around it. See our non-surgical penis enlargement consultations.

Private self-check: 5 quick questions
Answer these honestly before you buy anything or book. They help you see what you really need.
- Is your main worry length or girth, or is it really how firm your erections are?
- Have you measured your erect length correctly, from the pubic bone along the top of the penis?
- Have you already bought pills, creams or oils that did not deliver what they promised?
- Do you take medicine for blood pressure, the heart, diabetes or mood?
- Do you have pain, a new bend, a lump or a recent injury?
If firmness is the real concern, erection support is likely to help more than any enlargement product. If you answered yes to question three, talk to us before you spend more. A yes to question four means any product needs checking for interactions first, and a yes to question five means you should see an appropriately registered medical professional before trying anything.

Your health and safety
Our naturopaths use natural remedies and lifestyle support, and always check your health history and current medicines first. If a pump causes pain, significant bruising or an erection lasting more than four hours, seek medical care. Avoid unregistered “enhancement” products sold online or at markets, as SAHPRA has warned that some contain hidden ingredients.
Seek urgent medical care for chest pain, an erection lasting more than four hours, sudden weakness or other sudden symptoms.
